Anthony Romo with San Joaquin Valley College Honored as a Recipient of Career Education Review’s Top 20 People Changing Career Education

January 17, 2023

Visalia, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2023) – Career Education Review (CER) recently named Anthony Romo, Vice President of Admissions and Graduate Services at San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC), as a recipient of its Top 20 People Changing Career Education list – highlighting his incredible work in the postsecondary career education sector.

“It is an honor to be recognized for my impact on career education,” said Romo. “I have always believed that positive leadership is built from a foundation of integrity, character and trust. The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves. At San Joaquin Valley College we hold all of our students to the same standards that helped guide me to success,” added Romo.

Romo began his journey with SJVC more than 12 years ago in career services. After developing a successful team at SJVC Bakersfield, he was promoted to the corporate office as a specialist, which supported graduate employment for all the 17 locations in California. He was soon granted a promotion to Director of Graduate Services. The promotion to Vice President of Enrollment and Graduate Services took place a few years later, where he now a leader in admissions, financial services and career services.

Over the years Romo has supported SJVC by helping to introduce career education to local and nationally elected officials. Several members of Congress have visited SJVC campuses and taken tours of the nursing and respiratory labs and facilities after COVID-19 created a demand for more healthcare professionals.

Romo also serves as an advisor on SJVC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee that acts as an advisory board to each of its campuses. This committee surveys, engages and educates various groups within the college. They serve as a resource to employees and students so everyone affiliated with the college now has a ‘voice’ that can be heard.

“I would also like to acknowledge our Director of Graduate Services, Brandi Hammons, and our Director of E-Learning, Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Pat Fox, for the work we’ve done in offering a new resource for students,” added Romo. “SJVC’s Career Academy encourages lifelong learning to help a diverse population of students achieve success. With the growing popularity of online education, the ability to add gamification can help make learning more enjoyable while motivating students to become more engaged with the subject matter. This will be an important part of career education in a post-COVID-19 world.”

CER, a publication of Career Education Colleges and Universities (CECU), has identified the top thinkers, leaders, and innovators in career education today to honor their contributions to making postsecondary education better. Selected by a committee of peers, this year’s recipients represent a diverse cross-section of schools and programs in the career education community. The winners were profiled in the 2022 Winter Issue of CER, available to all CECU members and CER subscribers.

“It is important to highlight the work being done by these diverse leaders,” said Jenny Faubert, Editor of CER. “This roster of futurists, innovators, and change agents captures the spirit of tomorrow’s postsecondary career education leaders — those who have already moved the needle and whose work will help shape the future path of the sector.”
