At SJVC, there are many different medical and dental programs to choose from, so you can select the career path that best suits your personal and professional goals.
About the Program
SJVC’s Dental Assisting program trains students in all aspects of working under the supervision of a dentist, including patient care, preventive dentistry, and dental practice management. Graduates are eligible to take the Dental Board of California Examination for State Licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA). You can earn a Certificate of Completion in as few as 11 months.
Students enrolled in SJVC’s Dental Hygiene program receive hands-on instruction in fully-equipped clinics working with actual patients. Graduates are eligible to take the National Board written examination and a State and/or Regional Board Examination for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). You can earn an Associate of Science degree in as few as 16 months. Graduates may also go on to complete SJVC’s online Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) program for advanced career opportunities in leadership, education, and research.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Train to work as an ultrasound technician or entry-level sonographer in SJVC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Upon completion of 1,680 hours of work experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer, graduates are eligible to sit for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® (ARDMS®) certification exam.
You can earn an Associate of Science degree in as few as 17 months.
Health Care Management - B.S.
Learn the core skills and competencies needed to work as a medical assistant in California. SJVC’s Clinical Medical Assisting and Clinical and Administrative Medical Assisting programs will teach you to provide the hands-on training needed to work in clinical support in healthcare settings. Graduates of the Clinical Medical Assisting Certificate of Completion and the Clinical and Administrative Medical Assisting Associate Degree programs are eligible to sit for the National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) exam offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Graduates may qualify for other certifications depending upon location and placement requirements. Students also prepare for and take certification exams within their program courses that include HIPAA, CPR, and First Aid. Students residing outside California are encouraged to take a certification examination recognized by their state medical board or an independent certification organization.

Medical Office Administration
Develop the skills required to work in front-office positions for a medical practice, healthcare facility, or insurance company. SJVC’s Medical Office Administration program prepares graduates to work as medical secretaries, also called medical office administrators or administrative medical assistants. Graduates are eligible to take several national certification examinations, including the National Certified Medical Office Assistant (NCMAO) exam or the National Certified Insurance & Coding Specialist (NCICS) exam. Earn a Certificate of Completion in as few as 9 months or an Associate of Science Degree in as little as 15 months.
Medical Billing and Coding
Develop the skills employers are looking for and start your healthcare career as a medical billing and coding specialist. SJVC’s online Medical Billing and Coding program will teach you career-specific skills such as how to maintain patient records, interact with health insurance agencies, and process patient insurance claims. Earn a Certificate of Completion in as few as 8 months or an Associate of Science Degree in as little as 15 months.
If you want to become a pharmacy technician, the first step is to enroll in SJVC’s Pharmacy Technology/Pharmacy Technician program. Students enrolled in the program learn the fundamental skills needed to work in franchise pharmacies, hospitals, and for home health care providers. Graduates are eligible to apply for licensure with the California State Board of Pharmacy (pending other requirements). You can earn a Certificate of Completion in as few as 9 months or an Associate of Science Degree in as little as 15 months.
Are you interested in becoming a registered nurse (RN)? SJVC’s RN program can help you begin your career in as few as 21 months. Graduates of SJVC’s RN program are eligible to apply for the California Board of Registered Nursing and sit for the NLCEX-RN exam.
SJVC’s Respiratory Therapist program prepares you to work as a respiratory therapist and many other roles in the field of respiratory care. Students can earn an Associate of Science degree in as few as 19 months. Graduates may also go on to complete SJVC’s online Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) program for advanced career opportunities in leadership, education, research, and critical care.
Train to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in simulated operating rooms and through direct clinical experience in a medical/surgical environment. Graduates of SJVC’s Surgical Technology program are eligible to apply to the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) to sit for the CST National Certification exam. You can earn an Associate of Science degree in as few as 15 months.
SJVC’s Veterinary Assistant program provides the in-depth, hands-on training you need to help animals when they need it most. As part of the program, you will gain real-world experience in actual animal care environments during the externship portion. You can earn a Certificate of Completion in as few as 9 months.
Complete your Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology in as few as 18 months. Pet owners are projected to spend more on their animals, which is driving the growing demand for vet technicians in California.
Graduates earn an Associate of Science degree and are immediately eligible to work as a Veterinary Assistant. This program holds full accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), qualifying students to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) after graduation. Upon successful completion of the VTNE, graduates are eligible to obtain state licensure and work as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). For more information, please visit www.vmb.ca.gov.
Train to enter the nursing profession in less than two years with an Associate of Science in Vocational Nursing. SJVC’s Vocational Nursing program will prepare you to offer professional care to the sick, injured, and disabled under the direction and supervision of physicians and registered nurses. This program includes hands-on clinical training that enhances the learning experience and allows students to develop a work history. Vocational Nursing students can earn a degree in approximately 16 months.
Our RN to BSN program is a Bachelors degree completion option for Registered Nurses.
