Medical & Dental Programs

Clinical Medical Assisting

Medical assistants are healthcare professionals who work with physicians and other medical staff in doctor’s offices, hospitals, or outpatient facilities. Although their role can vary by location, all medical assistants perform both administrative and clinical tasks. 

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some of their day-to-day responsibilities may include:[1]

  • Record patient history and personal information
  • Measure vital signs, such as blood pressure
  • Help physicians with patient examinations
  • Give patients injections or medications as directed by physicians and as permitted by state law
  • Schedule patient appointments
  • Prepare blood samples for laboratory tests
  • Enter patient information into medical records

Pharmacy Technology

Medical Office Administration

Medical administrative assistants, also known as medical secretaries, perform administrative duties in and around a medical office or healthcare setting. Their tasks may include processing insurance claims, operating computer software, and keeping inventory of office supplies. Business & Criminal Justice Programs

Business Office Administration

Office managers complete administrative or clerical duties that allow an office to run smoothly. They can provide support to employees, stocking office supplies, and answer phone calls. Other tasks of an office manager include:

  • Bookkeeping
  • Organizing files
  • Processing payroll
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Assisting with travel arrangements for office staff

SJVC’s Business Office Administration program in Modesto will teach you these important skills needed to manage an office setting. Get started on your office administrator courses and be ready to work in as little as 8-15 months.

Criminal Justice: Corrections

Correctional officers ensure that rules, policies, and regulations are kept between inmates and the criminal justice system. Those interested in becoming correctional officers must hone skills like mental or physical strength. In a correctional facility, they may supervise the daily activities of inmates, process criminal records, and inspect jail cells for contraband.

Develop a basic understanding of corrections with San Joaquin Valley College’s Criminal Justice; Corrections program in Modesto. 

In as few as 14 months, you can earn the following certifications: 

  • Standards and Training for Corrections (STC)
  • Adult Core Academy, which includes 8-hour Baton, and Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) certified training in: 
    • Baton
    • Public Relations
    • Powers to Arrest
    • Chemical Agents
    • Weapons of Mass Destruction
    • Observations and Documentation
    • Communications and its significance related to Liability and Legal Aspects

In addition to certified training, the BSIS Exposed Firearms Permits may only be issued to applicants who are 21 years of age or older (effective January 1, 2020). Individuals who do not meet the new age requirement will be provided alternate training during the firearm sessions, and are welcome to pursue the certification after they meet the age requirement.

Trades & Industrial Programs

Electrical Technology

Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power, communications, lighting, and control systems in homes, businesses, and factories. They also work in various settings, like factories or residential properties. The duties of an electrician depend on where they work. These tasks can include anything from:

  • Install and maintain wiring, control, and lighting systems
  • Inspect electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers
  • Identify electrical problems using a variety of testing devices
  • Repair or replace wiring, equipment, or fixtures using handtools and power tools

At San Joaquin Valley College, you’ll learn how to install, maintain, and

repair electrical equipment and systems in a safe, competent, and professional manner. Our Electrical Technology program in Modesto is designed to help students learn effective techniques and best practices in the field.

Maintenance Technician

A maintenance technician performs preventative maintenance procedures, such as installation, minor repairs, and troubleshooting, on facility equipment. Their responsibilities may include replacing faulty parts, answering maintenance requests or calls from employees, and adjusting equipment.
