Medical Assisting
San Joaquin Valley College’s Medical Assisting program in Delano provides you with a high-level education in as little as 15 months.
Medical assistants (also known as MAs) provide both clinical and administrative support for physicians and other healthcare providers in the field. Many MAs are often cross-trained to perform the following duties:
Administrative roles may include:
- Arranging lab services
- Answering phone calls
- Scheduling appointments
- Reviewing patient records
- Organizing hospital admissions
- Using computer software programs
- Filling out insurance forms and billing documents
Clerical and back end roles may include:
- Interviewing patients
- Facilitating prescription refills
- Assisting physicians with patient exams
- Cleaning medical equipment and tools
- Drawing blood and collecting other lab samples
- Preparing medical treatments and administering them under the supervision of a licensed physician

Medical Office Administration
At SJVC, our Medical Office Administration (MOA) program in Delano trains students for a variety of medical office assistant procedures and competencies necessary for entry-level employment in the medical field. Their duties can vary depending on the type of healthcare setting in which they work. However, most medical secretaries may be responsible for tasks such as bookkeeping, billing, records management, patient data collection, appointment scheduling, written correspondence, and answering day-to-day calls.

During the program that can be completed in as few as 8 months, you’ll learn how to use advanced computer software, gain insight on business correspondence, and learn routine processes like accounting or bookkeeping.
