We all know the value of volunteering time and energy to support a good cause. And for students, volunteer work can be a way for them to help improve the community while enhancing their professional career. That is why Clinical Medical Assisting students from SJVC Atascadero recently volunteered with Paso Cares, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to help the homeless and families in need.

It all began when Clinical Medical Assisting Instructor at SJVC, Aubri Kouklis, spoke with her students about volunteering in the community to further develop their career. Aubri has been volunteering as a meal provider and server for more than two years, and when she mentioned Paso Cares, her students immediately showed interest in supporting their community.

Soon after Aubri and five of her students signed up to become meal providers for Paso Cares. They cooked up a main dish, a side dish, a desert, and brought enough bottled water to serve 50 people throughout the community. Everyone was excited and grateful for their support.

“Volunteer work can offer essential help to people in need while providing a sense of purpose,” said Aubri. “Volunteering can be particularly beneficial for students as it can help them learn new skills, advance their career, and even feel happier and healthier. I am proud of all my students and the work we did with Paso Cares to support our community,” added Aubri. “It is incredibly rewarding for me to be in a position where I can help people that may not be able to help themselves.”

The mission of Paso Cares is to “undertake activities, in collaboration with other existing organizations of San Luis Obispo County, that will provide for the immediate and longer term needs of homeless and needy persons and families.”
