Industrial Maintenance Technology

San Joaquin Valley College’s Industrial Maintenance Technology (IMT) program is designed to provide fundamental, hands-on training on industrial systems and equipment. Students will study and master the basic principles, applications, concepts and functions of hydraulic systems, bearing and seal types, and power transmission components.

Program Course Examples

Courses* taken by our Industrial Maintenance Technology students include:

Industrial Electricity
This seven-part course discusses the elements and applications of electricity that are common to any industrial facility. In strict accordance with the National Electric Code, this course will introduce students to electrical theory with an emphasis in those energy sources developed for commercial and manufacturing use.

Power Transmission
This course includes the operation, maintenance, safety, and troubleshooting of machinery, industrial bearings, industrial drive gears and gear systems, shaft joining and coupling devices.

Programmable Logic Controllers
This course presents basic concepts and applications of PLC’s such as the PLC language, performing installation and diagnostic functions, using program tools, basic communications and logic operations. The practical instruction of this course is performed with Allen Bradley equipment and RSLogix software, both of which are predominantly used within the manufacturing industry.

Program Outcomes

Students can earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 7 months, or an Associate of Science Degree in approximately 14 months.

With SJVC’s hands-on approach to training, graduates are qualified to go right to work in a variety of commercial and manufacturing settings as a Maintenance Technician, Production Supervisor, Hydraulic Technician, Machine Operator and Plant Electrician.
