There are a variety of job opportunities and choices within healthcare. You can work directly with patients, measuring vital signs, giving ultrasounds or cleaning teeth. Or you can work in a medical office environment, processing prescriptions, communicating with insurance providers or managing patient files. SJVC’s Dental Assistant program trains students in all aspects of working under the supervision of a dentist, including patient care, preventive dentistry and dental practice management. Graduates are eligible to take the Dental Board of California Examination for State Licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA). You can earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 11 months.

Students enrolled in SJVC’s Dental Hygiene program receive hands-on instruction in fully-equipped clinics working with actual patients. Graduates are eligible to take the National Board written examination and a State and/or Regional Board Examination for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). You can earn an Associate of Science degree in approximately 16 months.

Train to work as an ultrasound technician or entry-level sonographer in SJVC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Graduates are prepared to sit for the Abdominal and Small Parts and/or the OB/GYN Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS) examination. You can earn an Associate of Science degree in approximately 17 months.

Train to enter the nursing profession in less than two years with an Associate of Science in Vocational Nursing. SJVC’s Licensed Vocational Nursing program will prepare you to offer professional care to the sick, injured and disabled under the direction and supervision of physicians and registered nurses. This program includes hands-on clinical training that enhances the learning experience and allows students to develop a work history. Licensed Vocational Nursing students can earn a degree in approximately 16 months.

Learn the core skills and competencies needed to work as a medical assistant in California. SJVC’s Medical Assistant program will teach you what you need to know and provide the hands-on training needed to work in administrative and/or clinical support in healthcare settings. Graduates are eligible to sit for the California Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) examinations. Earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 9 months. This program is also available online.

Develop the skills required to work in front-office positions for a medical practice, healthcare facility or insurance company. SJVC’s Medical Office program prepares graduates to work as medical secretaries, also called medical office administrators or administrative medical assistants. Graduates are eligible to take several national certification examinations, including the National Certified Medical Office Assistant (NCMAO) and National Certified Insurance & Coding Specialist (NCICS) exams. Earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 9 months.

Develop the skills employers are looking for and start your healthcare career as a medical billing and coding specialist. SJVC’s online Medical Billing and Coding program will teach you career-specific skills such as how to maintain patient records, interact with health insurance agencies and process patient insurance claims. Earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 8 months, or an Associate of Science degree in approximately 15 months.

If you want to become a pharmacy technician, the first step is to enroll in SJVC’s Pharmacy Technology program. Students enrolled in the Pharmacy Technology program learn the fundamental skills needed to work in franchise pharmacies, hospitals and for home health care providers. Graduates are eligible to apply for licensure with the California State Board of Pharmacy (pending other requirements). You can earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 9 months.

Are you interested in becoming a registered nurse (RN)? SJVC’s RN program can help you begin your career in as few as 21 months. Graduates of SJVC’s RN program (approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing) are eligible to apply for the California Board of Registered Nursing and sit for the NLCEX-RN exam.

SJVC’s Respiratory Therapist program prepares you to work as a respiratory therapist, asthma therapist, pulmonary function technologist, neonatal-pediatric specialist and may other roles in the field of respiratory care. Students can earn an Associate of Science degree in approximately 19 months. Graduates may also go on to complete SJVC’s online Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) program for advanced career opportunities in leadership, education, research and critical care.

Train to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in simulated operating rooms and through direct clinical experience in a medical/surgical environment. Graduates of SJVC’s Surgical Technology program are eligible to apply to the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) to sit for the CST National Certification exam. You can earn an Associate of Science degree in approximately 15 months.

SJVC’s Veterinary Assistant program provides the in-depth, hands-on training you need to help animals when they need it most. As part of the program, you will gain real-world experience in actual animal care environments during the externship portion. You can earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 9 months.
