What types of students earn their degree through SJVC online?
Our online students are self-motivated and disciplined enough to handle the challenges of everyday life while also wanting to get ahead in their careers. Online learning requires focus, commitment and dedication. Any student who is organized and prepared to self-direct their learning is a good fit for online learning.
What are SJVC’s online courses like?
Our online courses are meant to be as similar to the campus courses as possible. The content of SJVC courses on-campus and online are the same, with minor alterations to fit an online environment. SJVC gives plenty of traditional assignments, whether those are written or assigned readings. There are also instructional presentations for students to view that can be paused and revisited as needed. Our online courses have a relatively fast pace, like SJVC’s campus courses. The only major difference is that you can choose whether you want to do your work in the morning, afternoon, or evening.
How much time will it take each week to be successful?
It depends on the student and his or her needs. Students should plan to participate in their courses at least three days a week. However, some students might need more time than others to review or ask their instructors or classmates for clarification. While online courses offer students flexibility with their schedules, there are weekly assignments.
What’s the difference between SJVC’s online and campus courses?
The only major difference between a program on an SJVC campus and online is how the information is delivered. The content, assignments, and time required is comparable but not identical. The largest difference is that SJVC’s online students have a greater responsibility to be proactive and stay on top of their studies.
What type of personal support is available for online students?
In addition to SJVC’s instructors who are ready to help if a student has questions, SJVC’s Admissions Representatives also check on our online students periodically to make sure that they are on the right track. If a student is having trouble understanding a specific topic, falling behind, or needs to ask a question, SJVC Admissions Representatives can help.
What type of technical support is available?
All online students have access to our help desk. Students can contact a technical support representative who can assist them remotely. Even from across the country, remote access allows an SJVC technical support representative to fix a student’s problems so they can finish their work. If a student has a problem relevant to the coursework, they can submit a request to their instructors for help online.
What are SJVC online instructors like?
Our instructors are people who truly care about the success of our students. Not only are they educated in the area they teach, but they have practical experience in the field. No matter what the problem is, they will do their utmost to help. They are not only committed to the success of the student, but also the integrity of the institution, holding their students to a high standard of conduct and excellence. Our online instructors are fully dedicated to student success.
How do I communicate with my instructor if I have questions?
Regular communication with instructors is facilitated through coursework and email. Your Admissions Representative is also available for general questions and assistance via email, phone, text, and Bomgar.
What kind of computer and software do I need to be an online student?
The technical requirements of the online courses are listed here. In short, you will need a PC with Windows Vista or newer, or a Mac with a Windows virtual machine.
Do I need access to the Internet?
Internet access is necessary to complete SJVC’s online courses. A DSL or cable internet is required. Dial-up or cellular air cards are not supported.
Will I use traditional textbooks or e-books while attending SJVC online?
The online courses use a combination of traditional textbooks and e-books, but the majority of books assigned will be textbooks. Depending on the specific program, additional learning software might be used.
How many students are in a typical online class?
Our online classes can range in size from 8-25 students, but the average number is 17. Our small class sizes ensure each student gets the opportunity to ask questions and be assisted when needed.
How do I connect with other online students?
A class list is provided in every course where students can contact each other using the course email function. They can also communicate during the discussion forum portion of coursework.
Can online students receive financial aid?
Student aid is available to those who qualify.
How do externships work as an SJVC Online student?
For certain programs, such as online medical assisting, an externship consisting of at least 180 hours is necessary for graduation. It is the responsibility of the student to seek out an extern site. Examples include a local doctor’s office. If finding a site is challenging, the career services department can help.
Can I attend a graduation ceremony?
SJVC’s online graduate can attend a campus graduation to walk just like any other SJVC student if they are near a campus. Check to see which of the campuses would be the best fit. An online graduation is also held, with all of the cohort’s graduating students recognized by name.
Will I receive the same diploma as a campus student?
The diploma is the same regardless of whether the program is completed online or on ground. The content learned is identical, as is the degree or certificate earned.
Is online learning right for me?
