Medical Billing and Coding Certification

Both credential levels of this online program prepare students to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) certification exam, which the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) calls the “gold standard for medical coding in physician office settings.”²

Upon successful completion of the Certificate or A.S. Degree program, all SJVC Medical Billing and Coding graduates who pass the AAPC CPC exam and complete Practicode are eligible to achieve full CPC status upon submission of school transcripts to the AAPC. Fees for the CPC examination and student membership to AAPC are paid for by SJVC upon successful completion of prescribed coursework.*

Earning your CPC certification signifies that you possess a sound knowledge of medical coding guidelines and regulations, and demonstrates expertise in assigning accurate medical codes for diagnoses, procedures and services performed by healthcare providers.

It is the student/graduate’s responsibility to locate an available AAPC test site to schedule and take the appropriate CPC and/or CPB examination.

Is Medical Billing and Coding in Demand?

Well-trained personnel are in demand to work for hospitals, insurance companies, medical and dental offices, healthcare clinics and more. Medical billing and coding specialists are needed to help organize and manage health information, which means the demand for these positions will increase over the next decade due to the aging population in the United States requiring more medical services, per the BLS.

According to the BLS, employment of medical records and health information technicians is projected to grow 11 percent from 2018 to 2028, representing approximately 23,100 new positions that will need to be filled.¹ The BLS also reports “most employers prefer to hire health information technicians who have certification, or they may expect applicants to earn certification shortly after being hired.”

Salary information from the BLS indicates that the mean annual wage for medical records and health information technicians was $44,010 ($21.15 per hour) in May 2018.³ California is the highest paying state for medical records and health information technicians with an annual mean wage of $51,880.4
