SJVC Lancaster Employee Featured on ABC News for Mural Celebrating Diversity

February 16, 2023

Diversity is one of our Core Values at SJVC and it all starts with the people who are a part of our community. Everything we do starts with the people we serve, and the people who work side by side with us, every day. That is why Marquise Grace, a custodian at the SJVC Lancaster campus, decided to paint a mural on the campus as a way to turn his passion for diversity into art for everyone to see. The mural was so inspirational that it was recently featured on ABC7 news.

“We have people from different cultures, different races, and most importantly, what I wanted to represent was women kicking butt,” Grace said of the mural. Each face in the mural is of an actual person at the college who has inspired someone else on campus, including Grace. “It’s a new beginning, whether that’s for women or men, you can come here and have an opportunity to succeed,” he said.

“This mural, looking back at it, I can picture the names and the voices and faces of all of the different types of students who have walked into this campus, coming with all of their different challenges, and seeing them come out successful,” said Campus Academic Dean, Sarah Moralez.
