Clinical Medical Assisting

The Clinical Medical Assisting program at SJVC’s Bakersfield campus provides hands-on training and entry-level courses for those interested in the field of medical assisting. Students will learn how to draw blood, maintain patient records, prepare patients for exams, and more.

Dental Assisting

SJVC’s Dental Assisting program in Bakersfield trains students to perform administrative and clinical tasks that support a dental office. You’ll work under the supervision of dentists and dental hygienists to perform a variety of duties, such as taking vital signs, x-rays, and assisting with dental treatments. Our Dental Assistant program also gives you a chance to learn a wide range of subject areas. Some of which includes:

  • Dental anatomy and radiology
  • Dental practice software
  • Dental practice management
  • Preventive dentistry
  • Coronal polishing

Medical Office Administration

Students at SJVC’s Medical Office Administration program in Bakersfield can learn everything from front-end patient care and appointment scheduling to basic office management procedures.

Receive a Certificate of Completion in as few as nine months.. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Certified Medical Office Assistant (NCMOA) exam or the National Certified Insurance & Coding Specialist (NCIS) exams offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Diagnostic Medical Sonography

SJVC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program in Bakersfield is designed to help students develop essential skills in the practice of sonography and healthcare-related fields. Our Diagnostic Medical Sonography students learn various skills through hands-on learning such as:

  • Fundamentals and professional aspects of sonography
  • Principles and instrumentation of ultrasound
  • Abdominal ultrasound imaging
  • Obstetrics, gynecology, and vascular imaging

At SJVC, you could earn an Associate of Science Degree in as little as 17 months. In addition, eligible to sit for the exams required to gain certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® (ARDMS). Students also earn certification in CPR/First Aid. SJVC prepares students to take appropriate certification and licensure exams related to their individual majors. The College does not guarantee students will successfully pass these exams or be certified or licensed as a result of completing the program.

Graduates of this program earn an Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Upon completion of 1,680 hours of work experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer, graduates are eligible to sit for the ARDMS certification exam. An alternative exam pathway is available to graduates who have earned a previous health studies credential (please see the Program Director for more information). Students also earn certification in CPR/First Aid. SJVC prepares students to take appropriate certification and licensure exams related to their individual majors. Respiratory Therapy

SJVC’s Respiratory Therapy program in Bakersfield combines traditional classroom objectives with practical, hands-on experience. Our approach to learning prepares students to become members of vital healthcare teams as they help patients with lung or breathing disorders.

As a Respiratory Therapy student at SJVC, you will learn how to:

  • Perform clinically as a competent advanced-level Respiratory Therapist
  • Exemplify critical thinking and judgment skills
  • Demonstrate personal and professional behavior consistent with a Respiratory Therapist
  • Earn Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) certifications

Surgical Technology

Surgical technologists support surgeons, nurses, and other health care specialists by preparing the operating room for various procedures. Because of them, medical teams can work in a clean, organized work environment during operation.
At SJVC, our Surgical Technology program in Bakersfield provides a traditional classroom setting with hands-on learning. This gives students a robust set of skills for entry-level careers.

Veterinary Assistant

Veterinary Assistants treat animals under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Electrical Technology

The Electrical Technology program at SJVC’s Bakersfield campus focuses on teaching students about electricity, electrical equipment, and the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems. Whether you’re learning about electrical blueprint reading or motor controls, we have everything you need to begin an entry-level career in Electrical Technology. You can earn a Certificate of Completion in as few as ten months or an Associate of Science Degree in as little as 14 months.

Graduates are eligible to take the California General Electrician’s Certification Exam, administered by the California Department of Industrial Relations (DiR). In order to be certified as a General Electrician in the State of California, pursuant to certification standards established by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, an applicant must pass a certification examination and complete 8000 hours of work for a C-10 electrical contractor installing, constructing, or maintaining electrical systems covered by the National Electrical Code.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R)

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) technicians install, maintain, and repair temperature control equipment found in modern homes and commercial businesses. No matter where you live, there is always a need for HVAC-R technicians.

SJVC’s HVAC-R program in Bakersfield is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment, as we provide career training in:
