BBQ brings two families together

July 28, 2014

CASSAMT BarbecueThe American Medical Technologists Student Society (AMTSS) on the Visalia campus wanted to introduce their families at home to their SJVC family by hosting a BBQ-Potluck held at Plaza Park on June 20th from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Event organizers were AMTSS Board members Charles Shelley, President, Tameira Thomas, Vice President and Yer Vang, Secretary, who really know how to throw a party…and lead an energetic crew. They organized about twenty club members who all pitched in to shop for and prepare food, plan games, buy prizes and provide set-up before and clean-up after the event.

At least thirty family members attended the 3-hour event and finally got to meet some of the people so important to their SJVC student, as they work to complete their medical programs.

Students prepared a variety of dishes in addition to barbecued hamburgers and hotdogs, including salads, noodles, homemade beans, potato salad, Jell-o cake, cookies and a huge fruit salad. Adults and kids, alike, enjoyed fun games like water balloon toss, pass the sponge and whiffle ball.

“I must say that the memorable moments were the three-legged race and the water balloon toss,” says Sujana De Almeida, Medical Assisting program instructor. “The adults and children had a blast, and enjoyed being squirted with cold water from the balloons, as they burst.”

Plaza Park turned out to be the perfect spot for this fun, food and games get-together.

“It was so great to see students and their families together, having a great time,” says Elisia Sanchez, Student Resource Coordinator.

Families from home and from the classroom left the park happy to have made each others’ acquaintance.
