Perhaps you don’t like the job you’re in or the ones you’ve had in the past, or you’ve been out of the workforce for a while and need to punch up your resume to get back in. Maybe you’re going in cold – no work experience.

An associate’s degree in business can be just the thing you need to be more competitive in the job market.

Every year, job seekers leverage business education and training into promising positions in administration, management, human resources, general computing, marketing, sales, accounting, and finance.

Let’s look at five great reasons to get an associate’s degree in business.

1. You can command more money in the job market

Earning an associate’s degree in business administration can potentially provide a significant financial reward. In 2016, people with an associate’s degree earned an average of $819 a week, as opposed to $692 a week earned by those with only a high school diploma, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. That’s more than a $6,600 per year difference.

The BLS also reports:

  • Business and finance operations occupations are projected to increase 8 percent from 2014 to 2024, which will add roughly 632,400 new business jobs to the U.S. economy
  • The average annual salary for business and finance occupations was higher than the average annual salary for all occupations in 2016

2. You’ll likely have increased career options

Nothing inspires job search confidence like proper credentials. With an associate’s degree, you can explore job options that were previously unavailable to you. It is one of the fastest moves you can make to qualify for a better job, higher pay and promotions.

The most compelling data on increased career options for associate’s degree holders comes from Burning Glass Technologies. They analyzed almost 900,000 business job postings from November 2015 through October 2016 and found that people who hold an associate’s degree were eligible for at least 50,000 more jobs than those who only had a high school degree.

3. Growth potential is greater

Achieving an associate’s degree may qualify you for an immediate raise or promotion. You may have gotten your foot in the company door with a high school diploma, but additional education is likely your best bet to gain the advancements and salary increases you want.

You might be surprised at how supportive your company will be, too. Many businesses provide tuition reimbursement to further incentivize employees’ higher education, including:

  • UPS
  • Wells Fargo
  • Bank of America
  • Baxter
  • Comcast
  • Starbucks
  • Verizon
  • Oracle
  • Fidelity
  • Publix

These employers offer tuition assistance between $1,700 to $8,000 per year. Some, like Bank of America, require employees to be employed at least six months and work a minimum of 20 hours a week for eligibility. Check with your company’s human resources department for tuition reimbursement opportunities and requirements.

4. Higher degrees are within reach

Maybe you are a planner, maybe you are a one-step-at-a-time kind of person. Start with an associate’s degree and go from there. You may settle in and enjoy the end-product of your associate’s education, or you may decide to push on for that bachelor’s or master’s degree. The door is wide open.

You’d be in good company, too. According to the National Center for Education Statistics:

  • 1.87 million bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 2013-14; of those, the greatest number (358,000) were awarded in business fields
  • At the master’s level, the greatest number of degrees (189,000) was awarded in business fields as well

It’s nice to have options you didn’t have just a short time ago.

5. Incentive looks good on you

Employers love a busy mind and productive spirit. Going for a degree or business certification demonstrates to a current or potential employer that you have a plan, the discipline to complete that plan and greater potential to benefit their operations.
