SJVC’s Surgical Technology program teaches students the theory and application of sterile techniques, as well as human anatomy and therapeutic and diagnostic surgical procedures.

Train to become a surgical technologist at SJVC.

Students Will Learn
Throughout SJVC’s Surgical Technology program, students will learn how to:

  • • Properly assemble surgical instruments and equipment
  • • Create and maintain a sterile field
  • • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs during operation
  • • Provide pre, intra and post-operative care
  • • Safely handle and care for specimens

Program instructors are Certified Surgical Technologists with high levels of experience in the field. Students learn in a simulated operating room environment and participate in clinical rotations to gain direct experience in a medical/surgical environment.

Program Outcomes
Graduates will earn an Associate of Science degree, and can do so in approximately 15 months.

Graduates also earn CPR certification and are eligible to apply to the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) to sit for the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) National Certification Exam.

Careers
Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon in clean, brightly lit and relatively quiet environments. Surgical Technologists stand for most of the day and perform duties that require concentration for extended periods of time. They enjoy job stability, a good salary and consistent work schedule.

Surgical Technologists can expect to work in:

  • • Hospital operating rooms
  • • Out-patient surgery centers
  • • Plastic and reconstructive surgery centers
  • • Birthing Centers
  • • Oral surgery centers
