SJVC’s Online Medical Assistant School trains graduates for careers in specialty clinics and medical offices.
The Certificate-level Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) program provides the basic training needed to work in a doctor’s office, focusing on clinical, back-office procedures. Graduates of the Clinical and Administrative Medical Assistant (CAMA) program receive an Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree and receive advanced preparation in medical office procedures, learning both front- and back-office skills.
In SJVC’s Online Medical Assistant programs, students learn:

CAMA graduates are often able to earn an Associate of Science Degree in as few as 14 months, and are eligible to sit for the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) exam offered by American Medical Technologists (AMT). CMA graduates can receive their Certificate of Completion in as few as 7 months, and can sit for the National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) exam, offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Graduates of both programs offered through SJVC’s Online Medical Assistant School also earn Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Certification, CPR and First Aid Certification. Certificate graduates also may continue their education at SJVC Online and earn their Associate of Science degree.
Skilled medical assistants are eligible to work in many medical environments including medical clinics, offices and hospitals. Graduates will likely carry out the following duties on the job:
- • Assess vital signs & medical histories
- • Aid the physician with various procedures
- • Clean & sterilize medical tools
- • Handle office accounting, bookkeeping & billing*
- • Process insurance claims*
