Health Assessment

This course provides the framework for preparing students to perform comprehensive health assessments on patients across the lifespan. Credits Earned by Students Receiving Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits

Incoming students receiving VA benefits will have any previous college coursework or training (military and nonmilitary) evaluated to determine whether the previously earned credit may be transferred into their program of study. All accepted transfer credit will be applied toward the student’s program of study and a credit of $411.00 per unit will be given. Transfer of Credit Policy, College Catalog.

Credit Earned through Course Challenge

Students may earn course credit in the subjects of math, English, and some program pre-requisite courses through successful course challenge. To challenge a course, students complete and pass an examination which tests their knowledge of the objectives and learning outcomes covered in the particular course. Students who successfully pass the examination(s) will be granted the appropriate academic credit. Students must complete this process prior to the first scheduled start date of the applicable course. No tuition credit will be given to students who successfully pass the examination(s). SJVC does not grant credit or allow course challenge for experiential learning or previous experience. Credit Earned through Course Challenge, College Catalog.

Applicants/Military Professionals Challenging LVN Coursework and Licensure Requirements

The program does allow applicants to challenge the LVN coursework and licensure requirements. To successfully do so, applicants must:

  • Achieve a benchmark equivalent National Standard for ATI Fundamentals Proctored Assessment (Level II) to establish foundational knowledge base

The College has well-defined policies and procedures that govern the acceptance of credit for coursework completed at other institutions, including military education and training for VA students (see Transfer of Credit Policy, College Catalog).

Registered Nursing FAQs

How long is the RN program?
People often confuse nursing degree programs with the registered nurse (RN) designation. If you’ve been looking for a RN nursing program that can help you pursue your career goals as well as RN licensure, you need to look at pursuing a nursing degree from an accredited educator. At SJVC, our Associate Degree in Registered Nursing program (commonly known as the Associate Degree in Nursing, or ADN) provides practical training for nursing professionals. Students learn med-surg nursing; geriatric and pediatric care; obstetric and neonatal nursing; and mental health care. Graduates are eligible to apply to the California Board of Registered Nursing to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN)*. * SJVC prepares students to take appropriate certification and licensure exams related to their individual majors. The College does not guarantee students will successfully pass these exams or be certified or licensed as a result of completing the program.
How to become a registered nurse?
What does it take to become a registered nurse (RN)? The first step is the right education. For your Registered Nursing program, you should pursue an associate-level degree. From there, you will need to take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN)*. At SJVC, our Associate Degree in Registered Nursing provides the information, insights and hands-on training to help you pursue your goals. *SJVC prepares students to take appropriate certification and licensure exams related to their individual majors. The College does not guarantee students will successfully pass these exams or be certified or licensed as a result of completing the program.
What does a registered nurse do?
Registered nurses (RN) are a vital member of a healthcare team and the backbone of any medical organization. They provide critical care to patients in every type of healthcare facility—hospitals, clinics, physician offices and more. They are often called on to perform physical exams, coordinate patient care, supervise Licensed Vocational Nurses/Licensed Practical Nurses (LVN/LPN) and more. RN programs, such as the Associate Degree in Registered Nursing program at SJVC, cover the educational training for becoming an RN.
What education is needed to become a registered nurse?
There was a time when a diploma program—coupled with passing the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN)—was all it took to become a registered nurse (RN). In today’s medical world, you need more out of your registered nursing program than a diploma; you need a degree. At SJVC, our Associate Degree in Registered Nursing provides the degree, practical training and medical insights. It also covers the concepts you will need for the NCLEX-RN*. * SJVC prepares students to take appropriate certification and licensure exams related to their individual majors. The College does not guarantee students will successfully pass these exams or be certified or licensed as a result of completing the program.
