SJVC’s online Medical Billing and Coding program trains students to work on the administrative side of healthcare.
SJVC students can prepare for work in a healthcare office environment by choosing the credential level that best meets their needs and career goals:
Students who enroll in the 9-month, Certificate credential level prepare for and take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification examination in SJVC’s Medical Billing and Coding program. This exam is administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
Students who enroll in the 17-month, A.S. degree credential level prepare for and take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Professional Biller (CPB) certification examinations in SJVC’s Medical Billing and Coding program. Both examinations are administered by the AAPC.

This course focuses on the performing of coding associated with the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) manual and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code book. The Evaluation and Management, Anesthesia, Surgery, Radiology, Pathology/Laboratory and Medicine sections are covered with emphasis on section guidelines and proper code section.
Body Systems and Pathology
The course focuses on basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology to a deeper examination of diseases, disorders, etiology, pathology, diagnostic testing, and common treatments of internal body systems. The course emphasizes applying medical terminology to situations in medical professions.
Medical Billing Practicum
In this course, students will assess their performance and application of acquired skills and knowledge in preparation for the CPB certification exam. Students will practice answering exam questions as well as have hands-on lab time to solidify essential skills. Students will also reflect on how to prevent test anxiety and practice test preparation techniques.
*Courses taken vary by program credential level. Students will take additional program courses on top of the three listed courses.
Our online Medical Billing and Coding students can earn a Certificate of Completion in approximately 9 months, or an Associate of Science Degree in approximately 17 months.
The Certificate credential level prepares students to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification examination. This exam is administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
The A.S. degree prepares students to take both the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Professional Biller (CPB) certification examinations, which are administered by the AAPC.
Test preparation and voucher(s) to take the exam(s) are included with the program.
Certificate and A.S. Degree graduates earn a typing certificate and HIPAA certification.
