Online students can meet their basic computing needs by using currently available, standard computers with Microsoft Office Suite (word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software) installed.
If your computer can run Windows XP, it should be able to meet basic security and upgrade issues. Be sure your system meets the software and security criteria below.
Software
- Windows Update should be set to install their software updates automatically.
- Windows Vista is recommended for PCs.
- Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint applications) is used in the SJVC Online computer courses. You will receive MS Office with your first textbook shipment.
Security
In the past year, computer security risks and threats have risen dramatically. It is important that students protect their computers. It can take only a few seconds for a vulnerable machine to be attacked and compromised.
In order to safely connect to protect your computer from risk:
- Install an antivirus software.
- Set the antivirus software to update DAILY.
- Set Windows Update to install automatically.
- Avoid file swapping services as they act as a breeding ground for viruses and worms.
- DSL/Broadband users should set up a firewall, preferably a stand-alone device, such as a DSL/Cable router, rather than a software firewall.
Network connections
Connect to the Internet:
- DSL Connection or Cable Connection. (RECOMMENDED) Call your phone company or television cable company to inquire.
- Dial-in connection, using a phone line and a modem. Commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are listed on the Web and in the Yellow Pages.
