A Day in the Life of a Respiratory Therapist

A Respiratory Therapist is a licensed healthcare professional that evaluates, treats and manages patients who have difficulty breathing due to respiratory illness or cardiopulmonary disease. Respiratory therapists work directly under physicians and, depending on the workplace, are responsible for a wide variety of tasks that relate to diagnostic testing, administering medications and rehabilitation services.

Respiratory Therapist Education and Training

Respiratory Therapist training is available at a number of schools in a variety of degree programs. Many respiratory therapy programs offer flexible class schedules and accelerated degree options. A typical curriculum for a respiratory therapy program includes general education, life sciences and a clinical externship. In order to be licensed in California, you must earn an associate degree from an approved respiratory therapist program.

There are a number of specializations within the respiratory therapy field. After completing the basic requirements for licensure, respiratory therapists can get specialized training in neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric care. Additional specializations include pulmonary function and rehabilitation, emergency care, asthma education and biomedical research.

Employment Opportunities and Career Advancement

Licensed respiratory therapists are employed by hospitals, medical equipment companies, home care agencies, physicians' offices, and managed care organizations. Career opportunities include Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), Registered Pulmonary Functionist (RPFT), Clinical Educator/ Case Manager (CCM) and Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).

Individuals who work well with others, keep calm during stressful situations and exercise independent decision-making are well suited to a career in respiratory therapy. If you are looking to start a career in healthcare, respiratory therapy is an option for you.
