We asked our IT students to give us a small insight into their academic and professional path. Here is what they said, in their words.
Robert Wooten, Bakersfield Campus
Jason Klee, Visalia Campus
Tim Clyde, Fresno Campus
Tanya Gippson, Modesto Campus
What made you choose IT?
Robert: I was looking for a new career path. I'm very good with my hands, very mechanical.
Jason: I have a background in mechanics. I was a mechanic in the Marines and I wanted to receive a certificate to show employers I am truly knowledgeable in the field of IT.
What facet of IT do you find the most intriguing? Why?
Tim: The hands on training because I relate well to being introduced to an idea and then practicing and demonstrating that same concept with practical experience.
Jason: Electrical is his favorite aspect of IT. The PLC program, gears, and computer program are what intrigues him. HE is fascinated how one can run something from across the state and do it with less wiring.
Have you had a favorite class? If yes, why was it your favorite?
Tanya: Industrial Electricity was one of my favorite classes because I learned to read schematics, did hands-on wiring, and learned how to check voltage continuity. All of these things can be used in the work field and home as well.
What, in your opinion, is one of the most useful aspects of IT?
Jason: Receiving the certificate is very important to me. It is valuable to have for employment opportunities. The problem solving skills learned at school are also useful and it allows me to run into problems in class instead of out in the field.
Tim: How the courses directly relate to the industry.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
Jason: Jason already has several applications into PG&E. He is also interested in the Fresno Electrician Apprenticeship Program.
Robert: I plan on finding a job with a decent retirement plan. Something where I am able to utilize my new found skills. I've been putting in for jobs in the oil fields.
What made you decide to come to SJVC?
Tanya: Location, PLC training, hours, and cleanliness of school.
Robert: It was accessible and it seemed to have the best program locally. At first I was looking at RT program and I changed my mind after meeting with the admissions counselors.
What do you think a student needs to succeed?
Jason: Not leaving class early will help students succeed. Attendance and good transportation are important. Students also should be prepared to follow through and focus on school. It would be hard to have a graveyard shift and then morning classes.
Tanya: Good Attendance, pay attention, read and study!
What struggle(s) have you faced since coming to SJVC and how have you overcome them?
Jason: Jason has to boys at home. He has help from his family and does a lot of studying at home. He tries to get ahead in class as much as possible each day.
Tim: At the beginning getting used to the pace of school. It's been a while cense I've been in the classroom but I have found a groove now.
Do you have any words of encouragement for fellow students?
Tanya: In my opinion, IT is a very good field for employment. If you come to class every day, stay focused, participate, ask for help when needed, or coming to tutoring and constantly study students can do very well. Mr. Mungcal is a very good instructor. He wants to make sure you are grasping the knowledge so the rest is up to you.
Jason: I would recommend students get as much help and support from family and friends as they can. Students should take time at home to read and look over their work. Don't jump into a class that you don't know what you're getting into. I sometimes use the internet to learn as much as possible if I don't fully understand a concept - I will download programs we use in class to practice at home. Just take in as much as you can. Listen to everything. Understand everything.
Robert: There are jobs out there. Work hard and study, you'll succeed.
Tim: Be ready to commit to the time needed to be successful.
