A Medical Billing & Coding Specialist works in the front office of a healthcare facility, assisting physicians with the operation of a busy medical practice. Billing & Coding Specialists are responsible for maintaining the privacy of patient files and the accurate processing of insurance paperwork. They enjoy a flexible work schedule, direct contact with clients and a dynamic environment centered on computer technology.

Medical Billers and Coders are employed by:
  • Hospitals
  • Clinics
  • Private medical and dental practices

Medical Biller and Coder: Roles & Responsibilities

Medical Billers and Coders often wear multiple hats or can be responsible for a portion of the job. A Medical Biller ensures that payment is collected for services given. This involves the transfer of information from a patient's medical record into the insurance provider's medical billing management system as well as invoicing patients directly.

Medical Coders are responsible to for updating a patient's records with standardized medical codes to ensure proper billing. This involves literacy in generally accepted international coding systems.

Required Training for Medical Billing and Coding

To work as a Medical Billing & Coding Specialized most employers require a HIPAA certification and various certifications in national billing and coding standards. Most Medical Billers and Coders and completed specialized training or college courses to prepare them for the field.
