SJVC’s Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program prepares students to offer professional care to the sick, injured, convalescent and disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. LVNs are an important part of a healthcare team responsible for detecting illnesses, medical treatment and rehabilitation, as well as patient education.

Train to be a licensed vocational nurse at SJVC.

Students Will Learn
Throughout SJVC’s Licensed Vocational Nursing program, students will learn:

  • • Patient care and nursing fundamentals
  • • Critical care concepts and healthcare ethics
  • • Laboratory skills
  • • Administrative practices

An intensive externship provides clinical practice in medical facilities in California and allows students to interact with patients and medical staff in a real-world environment.

Program Outcomes
Graduates earn an Associate of Science Degree, and can do so in approximately 16 months.

Graduates are eligible to take the State Board of Vocational Nursing licensing examination. Graduates also earn Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Certification. The Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians publishes institutional pass rate information.

Graduates from SJVC’s Licensed Vocational Nursing program qualify for a career as a Vocational Nurse. A nation-wide shortage of nurses has created a tremendous demand for available LVNs. As a well-trained professional, you can expect to enjoy flexible hours, job security and a stable income in such environments as acute-care facilities, long-term nursing and rehabilitation facilities, as well as home healthcare and hospice nursing.

On the job, LVNs can expect to perform the following:

  • • Patient data collection; patient condition reporting
  • • IV therapy and phlebotomy
  • • Medication administration
  • • Performance of invasive nursing procedures
  • • Supervision and management of health care staff
